In world news, there is more fallout for the world’s politicians that have their names listed on the Panama Papers. The latest developments are as follows:

Iceland’s Prime Minister initially resigned two days ago (Tuesday, April 5), but hours later, he said that he was still in power, but had decided instead to take a leave of absence. Also, three out of seven individuals on the Chinese government’s flagship committee, including President Xi Jinping, had their names listed on the collection of 11.5 million documents as well. Last but not least, the US Government is now going to force financial institutions to reveal the names of the owners of shell companies worldwide in response to this leak of sensitive information; and Amnesty International reports that the number of executions worldwide last year have reached the highest levels in a quarter-century.

In national news, a highly powerful coal executive was sentenced to one year in prison for intentionally violating mine safety standards; and the White House has announced that $510 million in funds that were originally meant to be spent in tackling the Ebola Outbreak will now be transferred to another budget that will be spent to tackle the Zika outbreak.

In local news, the former chief operating officer of Amtrak will now be the new chief executive of New Jersey Transit; and a middle school teacher in Newtown, Connecticut was arrested for bringing a gun to the grounds of Newtown Middle School.

And finally, the Magner Career Center and the School of Education here at Brooklyn College will host a special career development panel for education majors on this campus in two weeks from today.
