In world news, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake kills more than 100 people in Indonesia; and rebels are slowly losing their territory in the city of Aleppo to government forces in Syria.

In national news, by a vote of 94-5, the U.S. Senate approved the 21st Century Cures Act, which is new healthcare legislation designed to reform drug regulations, improve our mental health systems, and increase funding for research on diseases; and President-Elect Donald Trump has chosen Iowa Governor Terry Branstad as his U.S. Ambassador to China.

In local news, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio plans to use more hotels to accommodate the city’s growing homeless population.
