WavesOnGianni Discusses Rap Career On WBCR Show Flex and Finesse
By Oba Williams-Cantine
Up-and-coming rap artist WavesOnGianni guest starred on Brooklyn College Radio show, Flex and Finesse, host Henry Johnson and co-host Genesis Paredes.
The 17-year-old rapper started his career off with a bang when his first song snippet on Instagram went viral. He recently signed a deal with the New York-based label Roc Nation, alongside rap star, Megan The Stallion, radio host Angie Martinez, Belly and 3-time platinum artist Big Sean.
Gianni acknowledged that he couldn’t have accomplished his success without the help of his manager Yuroseason, “Shout out to Yuro for sure…he saw a video of kids dancing to my song at a party one day and he was like, ‘yo you’ve got something,’ Gianni said. “Posted me on his page and a whole bunch of labels reached out to him and he felt that Rocnation was the best fit and we went from there.”
Despite the success that WavesOnGianni has found in the span of two years, the young rapper looks to baseball as his true passion.
“That’s my life right there, before the music even came along,” he said. “It was baseball all the way. So baseball is always going to be there for the rest of my life.”
Before WavesOnGianni started rapping, he was a full-time athlete in school. It wasn’t until almost two years ago, after a shoulder injury, that he started to take rapping seriously since he wasn’t able to play during the season. With the encouragement of his family and friends, he went on to release his first song “Stop Calling”.
“So I was like, I got to try something new and my friends always told me I should take rapping seriously,” Gianni said. “So I tried it out and during that time also my aunt had passed away, and I used to rap to her all the time.”
Gianni shared his thoughts on rap beef, “all that talking stuff is nothing, like if it’s not about the music then shut up.”
“Like all that tough stuff. That don’t mean nothing. Like at the end of the day, like I said before, it’s about putting money in your pockets and making sure your family is good and doing the music stuff, that Old tough stuff, like it, doesn’t mean anything. Like it’s not getting you anywhere. That’s why I don’t care about any of that. that’s why I’m in the booth, minding my business.”
Before the interview was over he shared his plans for the rest of his senior year, “Like I set a time for doing what I gotta do and I set a time for having fun,” He said “I told my mom I’m going to graduate, so I got to graduate first; school comes first.”
WavesOnGianni released his debut Ep titled “The Heartbreak Kid” on November 25.
