USG Hosts First Ever Spirit Week

By Bryan Davis

Spirit week is upon us, even in this social distancing time. The Undergraduate Student Government hosted the first annual spirit week through social media.

“We had planned the first ever spirit week to happen this semester,” USG President Alyssa Taylor said. “To turn around and still make it happen in a digital format is an accomplishment driven by our service to the student body.”

From April 26 through May 2, USG hosted a different event every day that ranged from a virtual escape room to a stay at home scavenger hunt. They also gave out prizes and shoutouts to those who participated and shared their experiences through the hashtag #SpiritWeekBC.

“We wanted to be as inclusive as possible by utilizing the different social media platforms, in addition to sending out emails to our student base and various offices,” she added. “Giving participants the opportunity to participate in whatever way they are most comfortable.”

Taylor finds it important to continue interacting with the student body especially during these times. The idea was to see what experiences students were missing out on and for USG to do their part and maintain engagement with them. Showing BC pride over social media is a key factor during this time of social distancing and remote learning.

“We came up with the methods for each of the activities based on things that people are already doing,” Alyssa said. “The idea is to highlight the Brooklyn College student individuality and celebrate the pride we have for our academic institution.”

Spirit week has proved to be a positive for some students like junior film production major Ryan Schwach. He felt rejuvenated during this rough semester.

“Well I think it’s pretty clear everyone could really use some sense of spirit, Schwach said. “BC is one of the things that connects us.”
