The announcement of this year’s musical at Brooklyn College, Little Shop of Horrors, could be among the darkest comedies produced this season.

Taking on this nine-person production is MFA Directing student Emily Edwards, who takes on this project following a successful debut directing a mainstage play called Porto last fall.

“It’s definitely not your happy love story musical that you usually see.” She referred to it as “a little bit dark and a little bit sci-fi,” Edwards said when describing the musical.

The story follows protagonist Seymour Krelborn, an assistant at a floral shop, who stumbles upon a strange plant that ends up developing an unquenchable thirst for human blood.

Edwards hopes to cast nine roles after auditions in 307 Roosevelt Hall on Thursday, some of which require the use of puppets instead of singing and dancing. Those auditioning are expected to come with a 16-bar cut of musical piece ready to perform and will be encouraged to move around. Enthusiasm, time commitment, and singing ability are the three main skills that Edwards said she will be looking for when casting roles.

Auditions are open to students in any department. Callbacks are expected to take
place in early March and full rehearsals will begin on April 8. Performances will take
place May 23-25 in the Roosevelt Extension 307.

“I think it’s going to be a fabulous show to sort of end the school year on,” said Edwards.
